History of Warhol Chanel Posters
Andy Warhol created the Chanel N5 poster circa 1985 as part of his ADS series of prints. Chanel having the rights to use the image waited until 1997 to make the posters available to the general public for advertising due to his untimely death in 1987. The images were used in a campaign from June 1997. Here below is the recto verso of postcards given out at parfumeries in France using the Warhol image on one side and offering the perfume on th other. The text says that a limited edition poster celebrating Warhol and Chanel would be available for a limited time at parfumeries, department stores etc and thats where the 22x29 edition comes from. With the purchase of a bottle of Chanel N5 could have the Warhol Posters. The larger 47x67 inch size was used in June of 1997 at Bus Stops in Paris during a short period of time.
